If you’re in recovery and feel especially fragile or are craving alcohol even after you leave the environment, be sure to seek help. Call a trusted friend or family member or go to a meeting at a nearby support group. It’s up to you to decide how much information to share and who to share it with.

” I never know how to answer this question since the scale of how “bad” your addiction was is incredibly subjective. Sometimes I say it could’ve been worse, while other times I say, “Yes! I was bad enough I needed to quit.” Both of these answers are true. Along with their confused stares, people might get curious. Remember—people who drink don’t tend to surround themselves with a ton of sober folks, so you’re kind of a rarity! People might want to know why you are the way you are, especially if you’re willing to open up about why you don’t drink.

What Does Alcohol Do to Your Brain?

As is the case with all things, you can’t defeat it until you understand it, and this is the first step in doing it. The next is to change your lifestyle and environment. I didn’t think I was interesting or cool enough for people to desire my company solely on the merits of my personality. Drinking made me feel like I had a valuable place in a group. The point is that you don’t have to answer any questions you don’t want to, but if you do want to, have fun with it. What should I drink if I don’t like water?

Juice, smoothies, iced coffee, ice tea, protein shakes, milk, and other drinks can be excellent alternatives to water. You should avoid relying too much on drinks with a high sugar content, such as soda, certain fruit juces, energy drinks and chocolate milk.

Your judgment gets skewed, your emotions heightened, and your temper gets shorter. I don’t know about you, but when I wasdrinking, I attended any and every event, get-together, party, birthday celebration, wine night, or dinner where drinks were being served. In sobriety, I decided to only attend events that are worthwhile. It means that I only want to attend events that serve a purpose, celebrate someone I care about, commemorate a certain occasion or make me feel good. It might make you feel uncomfortable being around alcohol and those situations.

A therapist can support your efforts and help you find the strategies that work best for you, your health, and your life. Many times, we drink because it’s just a way to not feel like an outsider. There are many non-alcoholic drink alternatives to popular alcoholic beverages. Most places have a menu of “mocktails” that allow you to feel like you’re socially fitting in with drinkers, but not dealing with the effects of alcohol yourself. It also helps if you make friends with someone who also has—or is currently in the process of—overcoming substance abuse. These are the types of people that you’ll be able to talk with about the unique feelings and challenges you face, not just in developing a sober social life, but in being sober, in general. And I inevitably end up at booze-centric functions explaining my glass of seltzer.

Part of recovery is taking responsibility for it. If I’m in a bad spot, I have to either request a change or do something different or, at the very least, tell you. You’re not in charge of reading a sober person’s being sober around drinkers mind. I’m not sure if this sense of itchy isolation is the experience of every sober person. I’ve heard that you grow out of it; you discover the ability to grant grace and tolerance to drunk folk.

You might find that you get to know each other much better when you’re creating new memories—rather than standing around in the same old bars. They might have fun exploring new places and trying new things with you. Then, take the rest of your day to enjoy your time.

Know the Difference Between Early and Long-Term Recovery

Second, not all “Aw, come on” cajoling is about trying to get a friend to drink. In that moment, you maybe just wanted a friend to join the ritual that our culture frames as the very definition of intimacy. That’s just not necessarily how it feels to someone trying not to drink. In many cultures, learning to drink — well and responsibly — is a rite of passage that marks the transition from adolescence into true adulthood. In the US alone, over 140,000 people die from excessive alcohol use – 380 deaths per day. In 2020, opioid-related deaths only surpassed alcohol deaths by seven percent.

Early recovery means that the individual has just entered treatment or recently completed a treatment program. If you are around someone who has recently started or finished recovery, it is rarely okay to drink in front of them or even have alcohol present. Alcohol will always be a trigger for those in recovery, and it is significantly more triggering for those who recently started or ended treatment. Before becoming so neurologically unconstrained by drink, such sentiments would have been checked. Drunk, they become emboldened—now with an autonomous, and possibly outrageous, voice of their own. If you are dealing with angry drunks, it’s crucial to keep yourself safe.
